Farewell to Hugh | nanseltar's Blog

Hugh, my dog, is dead. He was such a beloved companion and friend. He was brave, cheerful, funny, took his watchdog duties seriously, and shadowed me wherever I went. He swam in the river every day, even in winter. He could run like a tornado forever. He was big and strong, beautiful, happy and extremely loving and gentle with children.
Hugh chased bears away from our property.
He chased deer away from the vegetable garden.
He chased our grandchildren in play.
He chased rabbits. And squirrels. And robins.
He chased cars. We tried to cure him of it, but he only learned not to chase them when we were looking. Yesterday he jumped out to chase the schoolbus. It was not the poor driver's fault. And I thank Spirit that no children were aboard yet to see it.
It's so tragic when a good friend dies so suddenly. It seems as if the life has gone out of everything, not just Hugh. The beautiful land around my home is simply filled with his not being there. I can hardly bear it.
Losing myself on EP has helped me take my mind away from it, but of course, it keeps coming back. So this is my farewell tribute to Hughie. This Blog Entry's Comment Board There are no comments on this post yet, be the first to leave one!
